The Easter Egg by Jan Brett (Author and Illiustrator)

Every year the rabbit who decorates the most beautiful gets to help Easter Rabbit hide the eggs on Easter morning.
 
This year Hoppi is old enough to decorate an egg, and more than anything he wants to win. But when he sees the dazzling eggs from Miss Flora, Aunt Sassyfrass and others, he doesn’t think he could ever do anything so beautiful.
 
Then he finds a robin's egg that has fallen from its nest and a frantic Mother Robin flying overhead. Unselfishly, Hoppi takes over and keeps it warm and dry, day and night, until it is ready hatch.
 
Hoppi's kindness is rewarded when the Easter Rabbit chooses the blue shell of the robin's egg as the most special egg of the year.
 
About the Author:
With more than 44 million books in print, Jan Brett is one of the nation’s foremost illustrators of children’s books.  As a child, she decided to be an illustrator and spent much of her time reading and drawing. As a student at the Boston Museum School, Jan spent many hours in the Museum of Fine Arts. Travel is also a constant inspiration, so with her husband, Joe Hearne, who was a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, she visits many different countries where she researches the architecture and costumes that appear in her work. Jan lives in a seacoast town in Massachusetts.
